The Art of LivingEarlier, an apple a day was enough to keep the doctor away. In these days of ever-increasing stress, a few million people are also including a certain breathing technique to their daily diet.

What is so special about the breathing technique? How does it work?

There is great secret in the breath,” explains Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living organization who has also formulated this self-healing technique. “You have an in-built ability to calm the mind, heal the body and energize the whole system in minutes,” he reassures.

Sri Sri Ravishankar calls the procedure ‘Sudershan Kriya’. In 25 years, it claims to have transformed the lives of millions in 146 countries.

One of the reasons behind the rage seems to be its simplicity. With regular practice, come the benefits. The course transcends barriers of religion, nationality and age. All you need is a couple of hours for a few days for the introductory Basic Course.
Since the course is fee-based, many point out that AOL caters only to the elite. However, Vaishali Ganorkar, an AOL teacher, begs to differ.

“AOL is the largest service based network. There are two parts to the courses. One offers customized fee-based self-healing courses for the urban classes that include university students and corporate executives etc. The proceeds from these are used to feed service oriented projects for the underprivileged such as prisoners, villagers and victims of war and natural calamities, free of cost.”

AOL today is an International NGO that has gained special consultative status with the United Nations. In India, the course is used to help rehabilitating patients in medical institutions such as the All-India Institute of Medicine (AIIMS).

Here in Bangkok, the center opened its doors officially only in 2006. Teachers flown in from neighbouring countries such as Hong Kong and Malaysia earlier conducted the courses.  Durga Mouli, Country Coordinator of AOL Thailand, says that the most noted project held by the organization so far has been the Prison Smart Programme held at Bangkwang last year for criminals convicted for capital crime. The aim was to offer them an opportunity to rehabilitate and integrate back into society.

The centre remains active with a selection of courses for varied requirements held at frequent intervals.

AOL’s next upcoming course in Bangkok is the Sri Sri Yoga, a comprehensive yoga programme to rejuvenate the body and mind over a period of 8 days. The event is supported by www.thaindian.com
