Zimbabwe opposition leader bows out of the run offJune 23rd, 2008 - 8:17 pm ICT by David M N James
Popular Zimbabwe opposition leader who won the presidential election early this year and was to go for a run off with the incumbent dictator Mugabe has quit the race for the presidency.
The opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has pulled out of the Zimbabwean presidential run-off, handing victory to Robert Mugabe. Millions of Zimbabweans are shocked by the decision. However, Morgan quit the race in a bid to save millions of lives at stake. Mugabe has released war veterans and soldiers to intimidate rape and kill opposition supporters so as to win the run off.
After the decision which was made public in Harare rally, violence broke in the capital causing huge pandemonium in the city. The ZANU leadership has threatened diplomats and food aid has been blocked to the needy who are now plunging deeper into poverty and hunger. It is possible that this will now come to an end since it was aimed at ending the MDC chance to win. It was pure intimidation and act of barbarianism experts have said.
Many opposition leaders and supporters have said the decision was not right and it was a big blow to the opposition and the people of Zimbabwe.
