The parts of the oldest Bible in the world that has been salvaged from disappearing in to shreds forever, has been retained and made in to an online enterprise. Almost 800 pages have been put together and put across on the Internet on Monday, July 6; for the first time for any such effort to have been made.
This endeavor has mostly been successful because of the efforts put in by quite a few of institutes from Britain, Germany, Egypt and Russia. It had been a project that had been spanning over a lengthy period of 4 years. Digital pictures had been taken of the pages of the gathered manuscript and sent to various scholars all over the world for a detailed research work.
The ancient fourth century Codex Sinaiticus or the Sinai Book has been launched today by the British Library. It is supposedly written in Greek and is the earliest known New Testament text to mankind. Fortunately, translations will be available for referencing. The Bible contains a very large number of annotations that corrects the original text.
A large volume of the Bible is present in the British Library in London, which held a exhibition on Monday, on the eve of the online launch of the website. The exhibition had on display artifacts that were of relevance and had a link to the Bible.
Scott McKendrick, the head of the Western manuscripts department at the British Library said, “The Codex Sinaiticus is one of the world’s greatest written treasures. This 1600 year old manuscript offers a window in to the development of early Christianity and first hand evidence of how the text of the Bible was transmitted from generation to generation.”
