World leaders cancel trip to Poland

Volcano Eruption WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — World leaders were forced on Saturday to skip the Sunday’s state funeral of President Lech Kaczynski because of the volcanic ash.

U.S. President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Britain’s Prince Charles, Sweden’s King Carl XVI, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un-Chan announced they couldn’t attend the funeral.

Delegations from India and Japan also have canceled the funeral trip.

Meanwhile, leaders from Romania, Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukrania and Slovenia are traveling to Krakow by car.

European air traffic officials on Saturday said the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland will continue to impact flights across north and central Europe until at least Sunday afternoon.
