Woman fights to keep disabled kangaroo
April 4th, 2011 - 10:21 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBroken Arrow, April 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A woman is fighting to keep her paralyzed kangaroo that officials want to take away. The woman suffers from depression but she has found solace in the company of the animal.
Christie Carr has been the owner of the animal since March 2010 when it was given to her after she tried to commit suicide. The animal has been named after the iconic Australian wildlife campaigner, Steve Irwin. The animal was left paralyzed after it tried to scale a fence. The animal currently weighs 11.3 kilograms.
The challenge that Carr currently faces is that Broken Arrow City where she currently lives does not allow exotic and wild animals in the city. Carr is seeking an exemption but the City Attorney is definitely against it.
Beth Ann Wilkening says the animal poses a danger arguing that, “kangaroo’s six-foot (1.8 metre) vertical jump, speed, powerful legs, sharp claws and natural aggressive instincts.”
The city council would vote on the 19th of April to determine if Carr should be allowed to keep the animal. When she was given the chance to address the councilors, Carr told them through tears that she has grown fond of the animal and the animal currently sees her as its mother.
