It is also possible to raise a vegetable garden at the backyard in frosty winter. All one needs to do is selecting the right crop and follow the tips for nurturing the vegetables. The plants that can survive the cold and frost need the right type of nourishment to yield fruit in winter. It is imperative to ascertain the timing of the snowfall in one’s region before planting the winter crops. It would be advisable to plant seeds much before the beginning of the period of snowfall so that by the time it starts the plants are matured enough to survive the chill.

Someone willing to raise a winter vegetable garden also needs to select the vegetables first. The root vegetables including carrot do not grow much during the winters. However other type of vegetables like broccoli and spinach keep ion growing if you nourish them properly. Hence, the best idea would be to harvest a combination of both type of vegetables. While leafy vegetables like Spinach can tolerate frost for short duration, prolonged snowfall and cold can kill them. Straw is ideal for protecting the rot vegetables. Leafy vegetables cope better with winter with glass tops.

During winter when the ground becomes frozen watering is generally not required. This is because the moisture deposited in soil by frost takes long to evaporate. The leafy vegetables can do better with a little fertilization. The carrots however do not need that. The winter vegetables should be planted at a place that gets enough sunlight.
