LONDON (BNO NEWS) — Prince William will be given the title of Duke of Cambridge by Queen Elizabeth II on Friday after he marries Kate Middleton, who will then become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.

It is a known tradition for royal grooms to be given at least one title on their wedding day, which is expected to be followed by up to 2 billion people around the world on Friday.

“The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales,” said Penny Russell-Smith, the Press Secretary to the Queen. “His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.”

Despite having the title Duchess of Cambridge, Kate will also become known as the Princess William of Wales.
