White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says 9/11 mastermind to be executed
February 1st, 2010 - 12:27 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) — The accused 9/11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is likely to be executed after trial, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said on Sunday.
“Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is going to meet justice and he’s going to meet his maker,” said Press Secretary Gibbs. “He will be brought to justice and he’s likely to be executed for the heinous crimes he committed.”
When John King, anchor for CNN’s “State of the Union” where Gibbs spoke, asked him whether Mohammed would be tried in the U.S. court system or in a military trial, Gibbs said that “[President Obama] believes that we ought to bring Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and all others who are involved in terrorist acts to justice, swift and sure, in the American justice system.”
The Obama administration said on November, 2009 that it would prosecute Mohammed and four accused September 11 co-conspirators in a Manhattan federal courtroom, just blocks away from where suspected Al Qaeda operatives destroyed the World Trade Center Towers on September 11, 2001.
After fierce criticism because of costs and security, a federal source told The New York Times on Friday that the White House is considering other places to try the suspects.
“We are talking with the authorities in New York. We understand their logistical concerns,” Gibbs said. “We will work with them and come to a solution that we think will bring about justice.”
Gibbs, however, did not confirm that the Obama administration is considering other locales other than the heart of New York City for the prosecution of the alleged and self-professed mastermind of the September 11 attacks, as well as four other co-conspirators.
