White House celebrates Civil Rights Movement with music

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The President and First Lady will host a concert in the White House as a celebration of the Civil Rights Movement on Tuesday, the White House said today.

As part of the Black History celebrations, the event, called “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement”, will begin today at 8:00 p.m. ET, which will have opening remarks from President Obama.

Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah will be guest speakers for the event which will be featuring songs, famous speeches and writings from the Civil Rights Movement.

The concert, which will be held in the East Room, will be pooled press and streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov. The concert will be broadcasted on TV on February 11th at 8:00 p.m. ET on public television.

As part of the event, the White House, along with some of the event’s performers, will also host on Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, “Music that Inspired the Movement,” a workshop for high school students from different parts of the country.

Participants include Yolanda Adams, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir, and The Freedom Singers, featuring Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, Rutha Harris, Charles Neblett and Toshi Reagon.
