New York, May 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The graduation ceremony held at the West Point Academy or United States Military Academy on Saturday turned out to be a grand affair for the cadets as US President Barack Obama donned the mantle of the speaker. He congratulated the cadets and told them that the hard and prolonged mission they undertake in Afghanistan will make them victorious in the end. He said that the cadets should prepare their mind to face the hard days ahead. Yesterday more than 1000 cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants for the US army. The president said in his speech that the combat mission will come to an end in Iraq this year and thereafter only civilian troops would be required to maintain normalcy and let the government function normally.
It indicates that the West Point cadets are going to be sent to Afghanistan where the US army is fighting a long battle with the Taliban extremist forces. In December last year the US president had come to the West Point academy and declared around 30000 cadets would be required for Afghanistan. The President admitted that the USA is facing a tough fight in the war ridden country but he also inspired the cadets not to lose courage amidst the adversities.
The cadets from the West Point academy have played important roles in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the last few years. However, the President reminded the graduates that military power cannot restore peace in trouble torn areas alone. Strengthening the economy and education are the other prerequisites. The speech of the President lasted for a little more than half an hour.
