Johannesburg, Dec 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A South African angler counts himself lucky to be alive after a horrific encounter with a great white shark. Werner Coetzee says he was just moments away from being attacked by the menacing creature when his friends came to his rescue.

The 35-year-old and his friends were out fishing about 2km off the coast of Noordhoek in Port Elizabeth. He explained that he was in a kayak when the animal came attacking. Using a massive force, the animal turned the kayak over sending Coetzee in the water.

He told reporters that “We eyeballed each other and I saw him change his attention from the kayak to me. Then I started pulling myself onto the hull. I lay there for about a minute, although it seemed like much longer, waiting for the next hit. But it never came.”

The next hit never came because Coetzee’s friends saw the attack and came in to help. A ski-boat which also happened to be nearby joined in to scare the creature away.

Experts say the rise in great white shark attacks can be blamed on the increase in the number of people to gets into the water. With the increase in the number of water users, encounters have become frequent.
