July 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A priest in the Roman Catholic Church located in Waterbury, Connecticut surrendered to police today (Tuesday) to answer for the charges of embezzlement in a case which involves 1.3 million dollars that was stolen from his parish.

Kevin Gray, who is 64 years old, was on medical leave from the Sacred Heart Church ever since the 15th of April. He is well known in the town and has served at several different churches in the community for the last 26 years. He was charged with first degree larceny.

Gray was allegedly spending the church’s money on expensive clothing, hotel rooms, restaurant meals, and male escorts. He was discovered by the Hartford Archdiocese during a financial review last month. The Archdiocese referred the matter to the police, who filed charges against Gray. The money has been slowly disappearing since 2003.

According to John Gatzak, who is the director of communications at the archdiocese, the review was done because the Sacred Heart church did not have a financial council for the parish, and Gray had not submitted yearly financial reports.
