GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA (BNO NEWS) – On Thursday, a man of Wake Forest, North Carolina pleaded guilty to health care fraud, U.S. Attorney George Holding.

Steven Thompson, 42, admitted to fraudulently obtaining Medicare payments for prescriptions drugs from January 2006 to June 2008.

Thompson, being disabled, enrolled in the Medicare Part D Plan that subsidizes the costs of prescription drugs for beneficiaries. The investigation revealed that during a two-year period, Thompson used the services of over 104 physicians and had 282 prescribed analgesics or narcotics which were filled at over 20 pharmacies. The amount of Thompson’s fraudulently obtained medications totaled $45,195.

“Drug abuse through prescribed medications is a growing concern for our nation. The investigators of this case must be commended for their hard work in piecing together the many physicians and pharmacies the defendant used to try to hide his illegal activities,” Mr. Holding said.

Thompson faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. His sentencing is scheduled for June 1.
