July 13th, 2009 - 1:07 am ICT by admin ( Leave a comment )TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (BNO NEWS) — Several journalists were arrested by Honduran police on Saturday evening, the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Washington, D.C. said in a brief statement.
The journalists were part of Venezuelan-based Telesur TV and Venezolana de Television (VTV), the embassy said. It did not say how many journalists were detained.
“During the arrest, the journalists were subjected to a review of their documents, under threat of expulsion from Honduras by police loyal to the dictatorial government,” the statement read.
It said the journalists were freed because of intercession by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro. The Telesur team is being sheltered in the Venezuelan embassy in Honduras while the VTV team will return to the hotel where they were originally staying. The embassy says they are still under the threat of expulsion.
On June 28, the military staged a coup and deported President Manuel Zelaya from the country. The same day, Roberto Micheletti was sworn-in as acting President until elections in November. The de facto government, however, claims the removal of President Zelaya was according to law.
The international community had earlier condemned the coup and as of July 12, no other country has formally recognized the new government.
