burqwaBrussels, Apr 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Belgium was all set to become the first European nation to impose a ban on wearing the Islamic burqa on Thursday but the breakdown of the coalition government of the country prevented voting to take place in this regard in the Parliament. As the coalition government in Belgium collapsed, Prime Minister Yves Leterme tendered his resignation deepening the political crisis in the country.

The collapse of the coalition government resulting from the withdrawal of support of some of the pivotal parties comes on the day the Parliament was scheduled to vote on the imposition of ban on wearing clothes or veils which inhibit the full identification of a person. It has been reported that the home affairs committee of the federal government had reached a unanimous decision in this regard in the month of March supporting a nationwide ban on the veils and clothes which include burqa as well as full-face niqab. It had also been stated that those who choose to flaunt the norms could face a fine or might also have to face a prison sentence for few days if they do not have the permission of the authorities to wear the garment. All the governing parties as well as the opposition parties had reportedly given their consent to the move.

Meanwhile, Belgium is not the only European country which is looking forward to implement the ban on such garments. The French government has also stated that a bill in this regard would be submitted to the parliament in May which would result in the banning of the Islamic garments from all public places.
