volcanoHvolsvoellur, Iceland, Mar 22, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A volcano in Iceland erupted on early Sunday morning, which led to hundreds of residents fleeing from their homes and large scale evacuation taking place in the area adjoining the region. Although as of now, reports of any extensive damages as well as loss of lives has not been reported, authorities are keeping no stones unturned to ensure that the magnitude of damage caused by the eruption can be reduced as much as possible.

The volcano situated near the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier at a distance of 120 km from the capital city of Reykjavik erupted with smoke and lava oozing out of it, which had been dormant for the past two hundred years. Officials have stated that in order to avoid any further damage, an estimated five hundred people have already been evacuated from the location with airspace in Iceland being closed and flights being diverted. Despite the fact that the damage owing to the volcano eruption is expected to be less as the area is sparsely populated, the impact from the eruptions is quite considerable while the situation is being closely watched.

Meanwhile, an official of the Icelandic civil protection department has confirmed to a news source that no one is likely to remain in the danger area with hundreds of people being evacuated from the region. Initially it was being presumed that the eruption might trigger floods as ice on the glacier might melt, but authorities have stated that the possibility seems unlikely as of now. However, scientists have warned that the volcano eruption could cause more activity in the nearby area.
