Volcano eruption in Indonesia, at least four feared dead
August 7th, 2010 - 1:25 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattJakarta, Aug 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Authorities in Indonesia say that four people are feared dead and another five injured after a volcano eruption in the country.
The eruption, which occurred on Friday happened at one of the country’s most active volcanic spots - Mount Karangetang. It ought to be mentioned that Mount Karangetang is located on the Siau Island, and it remains one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and in the world as well.
Authorities managed to evacuate about sixteen families to safer places before the eruption. One of the injured person’s condition was described as serious by the authorities. The eruption managed to destroy several buildings including a local church at the village while the lava from the eruption buried at least one house.
Authorities say that a bridge that connected the village with six other villages was destroyed by the eruption. It is estimated that the bridge has isolated about 20,000 inhabitants of the six villages. Rescuers have been dispatched to the place to help in finding the four people that are feared to be dead.
The eruption, which was not, a massive one managed to escape the radar as there was no prior warning from authorities. Authorities say they do not expect the death toll and the number of injured to rise.
