LONDON (BNO NEWS) — Several European countries halted flights until further notice due to drifting ash from an Icelandic volcano, according to authorities and media reports.

All non-emergency flights in and out of UK airspace were suspended Thursday from 11:00 GMT, air traffic controller NATS said.

Media reports said Denmark is to close its airspace by 16:00 GMT. Belgium airspace and parts of German airspace will close also this afternoon.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport said in an statement that more cancellations are expected.

“As a result from the ongoing volcanic activity in Iceland, the disruption of air traffic from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is expected to increase from 14.00 hours onwards,” Schiphol airport said.

British Airways canceled all flights from UK airports until tomorrow, according to Sky News.

Flights were also canceled across Ireland, Norway and Sweden.
