Sonya ThomasNew York, Sep 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) At the first glance it is really hard to imagine that the skinny woman would be able to eat 181 chicken wings in just 12 minutes. However, for Sonya Thomas gobbling down the whopping number of chicken wings did not seem as an uphill task as the 43-year-old was crowned the new speed eating champion at the National Buffalo Wing Festival on Sunday.

The event which reached its ninth year this time witnessed the presence of speed eaters from many states across the country who competed to win the much-coveted title of champion. However, it was Sonya Thomas’ lucky day as she convincingly defeated the defending champion Joey Chestnut who unfortunately failed to showcase his eating prowess to the fullest this time around. As the contest commenced, the 43-year-old woman looked determined to win as she twirled the meat quickly and went on to gobble it down as swiftly which enabled her to eat 4.86 pounds of chicken wings within 12 minutes. In the meanwhile, the reigning champion Joey Chestnut was able to eat only 169 chicken wings compared to the 189 wings savored by the Alexandria, Virginia native who went home with the speed eater champion trophy.

Drew Cerza, who is the founding member of the National Buffalo Wing Festival later told the reporters that the two frontrunners of the contest gave each other stiff competition with Joey Chestnut being really strong wit his jaw while Sonya Thomas was quick with her hands. “I’m so happy!” is all the 43-year-old winner had to say after registered the crown although she surprisingly added that she was still hungry after gobbling down 189 wings.
