Veterans Honor Iwo Jima’s 65th Anniversary

Iwo Jima Arlington VA February 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Monday morning, at 10:17 am, a flag raising ceremony began to honor those who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. The day marks the 65th anniversary of that fateful battle, which changed the direction of World War II.

The ceremony took place at the Marine Corps War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington Virginia, and was to honor all Marines who died in any wars, as well as those who died at Iwo Jima. Many Veterans were there for the ceremonies, to honor those who died in battle as well as those who passed on since.

Another ceremony was held on Saturday, at Houston TX’s Westin Oaks Galleria as a reunion for those Veterans who fought at Iwo Jima. Ernest Kubosh, who is 95 years old is the oldest living survivor of Iwo Jima. He was there along with his daughter, Lisa Hargrove, who had this to say,”There’s a whole generation that’s not going to be here much longer, and when they go, their history goes with them”.

Kubosh was wounded at Iwo Jima, when he fought with the Navy Seabees. He was also given a Purple Heart for his heroic actions.He is at the reunion every year, in hopes of keeping in touch with others who can relate to his memories. He explains,”You don’t talk about it too much, but here you can if you want to”.

This battle remains as the most violent battle in Marine Corps history, and was fought from February to March of 1945.
