New York, Nov 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Veterans Day is an annual American holiday with the aim of honoring its military veterans and the sacrifice that they selflessly did for their country so that the other citizens could live in peace. It is a federal holiday as well as a state holiday too, in all states, and it is usually observed on November 11.
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed an Armistice Day to fall on Nov.11, 1919. Then the Congress passed a Resolution on June 4, 1926 to observe Nov. 11 as Armistice Day as a holiday with appropriate ceremonies befitting it.
Then in 1954, through the efforts of an Emporia, Kansas’s business owner and a local Congressman, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill to be made into a law on May 26, and Congress amended it replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans.” Thus Veterans Day was born which is celebrated on 11th November, with parades and other festivities.
Now the Nurses Corps will also be honored in a parade. Veterans will honor 10 members of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps who trained at Reid Hospital during World War II through a parade. The parade is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 14 on East Main from 14th Street to the Freedom Fountain in front of the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 N. Fifth St.
“We’re excited about their being part of this event,” said Ron Weadick, president of the Veterans Council of Wayne County. “We want to build on the tradition we started last year and have it become an annual recognition of all our veterans, past and present.”
