Venezuelan President Chavez says raids expected in currency probe
May 15th, 2010 - 4:05 am ICT by BNO NewsCARACAS, VENEZUELA (BNO NEWS) — Leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday said that its government will likely carry out raids on people linked to currency websites, as part of a fight against speculation in the foreign exchange market.
“[There are] Internet sites that are violating the law, there are some guys who published a page called “parallel dollar” and if you see the page URL, they are located in the U.S., Germany, England (…) Do not be surprised if there are raids in the next few hours,” President Chavez said.
Speaking on state television, Chavez said Venezuela’s economy is “solid.” He said that, like all countries, there are some problems but dismissed comparisons with the Greek financial crisis.
Consumer prices surged 5.2 percent in April as the annual inflation rate has surpassed 30%; the bolivar fell to 8.2 per dollar on Monday.
