CARACAS, VENEZUELA (BNO NEWS) – Venezuela President Hugo Chavez on Monday announced that the Venezuelan government will forgive any debts held by Haiti.

During a meeting of the Political Council of Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), President Chavez said that in view of the tragedy suffered by the Caribbean nation of Haiti, its debt will not only be forgiven, but the Venezuelan oil supply to the country will continue.

President Chavez also proposed that ALBA countries create a humanitarian fund for Haiti of $100 million, to strengthen the aid offered by other countries.

President Chavez explained that the fund will be financed by the governments, peoples, and companies that integrate the Latin American organization.

This comes after last Monday’s statement from President Chavez accusing the United States of occupying Haiti in the name of humanitarian aid, and “playing god” by testing devices capable of creating eco-type catastrophes in Haiti.
