irabn September 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pope Benedict XVI, and the Catholic Vatican in Italy is hoping to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani , the woman from Iran who has caught the attention of people all over that world after being sentenced to death by stoning for the crime of adultery.

Ashtiani was recently given a new sentence of 99 lashing after a British newspaper made the mistake of publishing a photo which was said to be her. The “Times of London’ later issued an apology for publishing the photo of a the woman, who was not wearing a veil, but was mistakenly identified as Ashtiani. It is not clear whether or not the sentence will be carried out.

The ‘Time of London feels that the new sentence was just another way of punishing Ashtiani and making a point to so many organizations which are against the stoning of the woman. “The regime’s purpose is to make Ms. Ashtiani suffer for an international campaign to save her that has exposed so much iniquity,” the paper stated.

Ashtiani’s son, Sajad petitioned the Pope and The Vatican in hopes of saving his mother’s life. Her execution was stayed in July, after her two children managed to halt the process by having calls from human rights activist organizations all over the world. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as many well known celebrities stepped in to create a petition in support of her release.
