USS New York Makes Maiden Voyage From New Orleans to NYC

USS New York New Orleans, Oct 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Navy assault ship, named USS New York built with salvaged steel from the World Trade Center towers, which were bombed by incoming flights. The ship began its maiden journey to New York on Tuesday, and it sailed down the Mississippi River for its commissioning ceremony. She was named in honor of the dead of the 9/11 bombing of the Twin Towers. There was a fog, as onlookers along the dock strained for a glimpse of the departing ship.

According to media reports, the USS New York, so named to commemorate the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, left the Northrop Grumman shipyard where it was built from salvaged steel for the trip to its namesake city.

The USS New York was made on a budget of $1 billion is 684 feet long. It is a Marine amphibious transport ship with a crew of just over three hundred and can carry up to 800 Marines. It has a flight deck that can handle helicopters and the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft too.

It will be formally commissioned in New York at the Intrepid Museum Pier 88 South on November 7th, 2009. Afterwards the USS New York ship will be home ported at Norfolk, Virginia.
