BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) — U.S. Vice President Biden arrived in Baghdad on Friday to meet with Iraqi leaders and visit U.S. troops there.
Biden’s visit to Iraq is not completely unexpected. Last Wednesday, Iraqi president Jalal Talabani told Al-Mustaqbal TV that Biden would soon visit his country, but did not provide a specific date.
He is scheduled to receive updates from U.S. military and civilian leaders while in Iraq, the White House said. He is also expected to meet with President Talabani, Prime Minister al-Maliki, Speaker of the Council of Representatives al-Samarrai and other political leaders. He will also meet with the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Iraq Ad Melkert to discuss U.S. and international efforts to support Iraq, with a focus on the national elections scheduled for March.
Friday’s visit to Baghdad is Biden’s third trip to Iraq in the past 12 months.
