U.S. Transport Secretary Lahood says he misspoke on Toyota recall
February 4th, 2010 - 1:45 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Transport Secretary Ray Lahood issued a statement Wednesday where he encouraged American citizens to contact their local dealer to fix their Toyota vehicles as soon as possible.
Earlier today he told Toyota owners to “stop driving” and get repairs. Later he said that “it was obviously a misstatement”.
Lahood added that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will continue to pursue Toyota in order to find a solution as soon as possible, the Department of Transportation said.
The NHTSA is also investigating all the possible causes of this failures and Secretary Lahood will seek an interview with Toyota’s president Akio Toyoda.
In January 2010, Toyota announced that 2.3 million cars had an internal problem in the accelerator pedal that causes it to get stuck or become harder to depress and slower to return to the closed position.
