WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday congratulated the people of New Zealand for the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

“This is an occasion that brings together all New Zealanders – both Maori and those who arrived in later generations – and an opportunity to honor your rich history and reaffirm the hopes we all share for a brighter future,” Clinton said. “New Zealand’s success in bringing together people from different backgrounds and beliefs serves as a model to nations around the globe,” she added.

February 6 marks the 170th anniversary of the Treaty, which was signed in 1840. The Treaty is today considered as the founding document of New Zealand as a nation.
