U.S.: Ready to assist Chile, all U.S. embassy staff accounted for

Chile earthquake WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — The United States says it has no information on American casualties after a destructive 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Chile, unleashing a large tsunami that triggered tsunami warnings in dozens of countries. The United States says its ready to assist.

“Heartfelt condolences and prayers for the people and residents of Chile who are confronted with this disaster,” U.S. State Deprtment spokeswoman Megan Mattson said. “We are committed to helping the people of Chile as well as looking after the well-fair of the many Americans who live in and visit Chile each year.”

Mattson said the government had not yet received information about possible American casualties in Chile, but said a warning message was sent to any Americans on the ground. “All [U.S.] embassy personnel [..] are accounted for,” Mattson said.

Americans who are seeking information about friends of family in Chile are advised to contact the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs at 1-888-407-4747.
