obama1 Washington DC, May 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US President Barack Obama is sending 1,200 National Guard troops to the Mexican border. Officials said that this move would strengthen security on the border. The US President is also thinking about asking for half a billion dollars for in order to enforce protection and law enforcement at the border.

The troops will work on surveillance and intelligence on the border. The National Guard troops would also support efforts to stop drug trafficking on the border. Arizona’s passage of a tough immigration law has brought the issue of illegal immigration in to the spotlight. Illegal immigrants and drugs from the Mexicans are posing challenges to the United States and Barack Obama’s promised immigration reform.

President George W. Bush in 2006 had deployed thousands of troops on the border in an apparent bid to strengthen security there. However their mandate has since expired and they have returned. But politicians and officials in the border States have called for more troops to be deployed to help fight the illegal Mexican immigrants and drug smugglers.

McCain said on Tuesday that the present situation on the U.S. -Mexico border has “greatly deteriorated.” He also added that, “I appreciate the additional 1,200 being sent … as well as an additional $500 million, but it’s simply not enough”.
