January 28th, 2011 - 11:47 pm ICT by BNO NewsMCALLLEN, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) — A U.S. Missionary on Wednesday was killed after being shot by gunmen on a highway in northern Mexico, the Pharr Police Department informed on Thursday.
Nancy Shuman Davis, 59, of Monte Alto, Texas, was declared dead at a hospital nearby Mcallen, Texas after being admitted in critical condition. She was shot in the head about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Reynosa, Tamaulipas.
Davis and her husband, Sam, are missionaries and travel extensively into Mexico. On Wednesday, they were travelling in a blue pick-up truck when they were confronted by gunmen occupying a black pick-up truck.
The suspects attempted to stop the missionaries but Sam Davis accelerated in order to get away from them. During the pursuit, the gunmen fired shots at the blue pickup and Nancy was struck in the head by one bullet.
Sam Davis continued driving to avoid gunmen until reaching the Pharr International Bridge. A police officer noticed the blue pickup approaching the U.S. Customs primary checkpoint.
Pharr Officers and U.S. Customs Agents approached the vehicle which had stopped due to traffic and Davis got off the vehicle towards them explaining the situation. Nancy was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.
U.S. Authorities contacted their Mexican counterparts and launched an investigation on Thursday. The Texas Department of Public Safety, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.), FBI, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are cooperating with the case.
In November, the American Consulate in Matamoros warned about that many Americans were carjacked and robbed by gunmen in the area. The Consulate issued a warning over traveling on the Tamaulipas’ roads.
