NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – The New York City Fire Department and the U.S. Marines’ Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF) will conduct a large scale drill on Thursday morning at the FDNY Fire Academy, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) announced on Wednesday.

The Fire Academy, on Randall’s Island, will have around 100 firefighters and 100 Marines participating in the drill at 10:00 a.m. local time on Thursday. The drill will involve the use of a burned-out city bus to simulate conditions first-responders would encounter when trying to rescue passengers and provide emergency medical care on the scene.

The CBIRF team will also utilize the FDNY subway simulator for another phase of the drill, which involves rescuing and decontaminating individuals posing as patients who have been subject to a toxic release on the subway car.

The drill is the culmination of a week-long training session, in which CBIRF has been learning the tactics and procedures the FDNY would use during the event of such an emergency. The exercise is also an opportunity for local and federal agencies to coordinate responses to large-scale disasters and work together.

CBIRF is a unit of the Marines based in Indian Head, Maryland and responsible for countering the effects of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or high-yield explosive incident.
