- WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — James Wenneker Von Brunn, the Neo-Nazi gunman who opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, has been charged with first degree murder, prosecutors said on Thursday.
On Wednesday afternoon, Brunn walked into the D.C. Holocaust Memorial Museum and opened fire, killing a security guard. Other security guards then returned fire, seriously injuring him.
“Defendant James Wenneker Von Brunn willfully, deliberately, maliciously, and with premeditation and malice aforethought, did commit murder in the first degree, by killing Stephen Tyrone Johns, within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States,” a complaint released by the United States Attorney’s Office read. He has been charged with murder in the first degree and killing in the course of possession of a firearm in a federal facility.
The criminal complaint further details on how the events surrounding the shooting unfolded. The document details that, at approximately 12.44 p.m. local time, James W. Von Brunn drove up to the front of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Brunn was driving a 2002 red Hyundai bearing a Maryland license plate. He double parked his vehicle, stepped out of the driver’s side of the vehicle and approached the entrance to the museum. Brunn was carrying a rifle at his side as he approached the building, the complaint read.
“As the defendant approached the entrance to the museum, Special Police Officer Steven Tyrone Johns, who was employed as a security guard for the museum, opened the door for the defendant. The defendant raised his rifle, aimed it at SPO Johns and fired one time, striking SPO Johns in the left, upper chest area,” it continued. Brunn then continued through the door and raised his firearm as if to fire again, when two other SPO officers immediately returned fire. The suspect was shot in the face and fell backwards outside the door.
All of the events were captured on video and have been viewed by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. When officers arrived on scene, they found Brunn suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. A .22 caliber rifle was found next to him.
SPO Stephen Tyrone Johns was then transported by D.C. EMS 4 to George Washington Hospital where all life-saving efforts failed and he was pronounced dead by Dr. Najan at 3.09 p.m. local time.
MPD evidence technicians recovered several items of evidence from the scene, including eight .38 caliber cartridges casings, three .22 caliber cartridge casings, and a .22 caliber rifle loaded with ten live rounds of ammunition.
Following the arrival of emergency personnel at the scene, bomb dogs were brought to the scene and indicated a positive hit for the possibility of explosives in Brunn’s car. Officers did a cursory search of the vehicle but did not find any indication of an explosive device.
Officers did, however, recover a notebook that had handwritten notations stating the following: “You want my weapons - this is how you’ll get them. The Holocaust is a lie. Obama was created by Jews. Obama does what his Jew owners tell him to do. Jews captured America’s money. Jews control the mass media. The 1st Amendment is abrogated - henceforth. See: holywesternempire.org. JVB swore (LT USNR) to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Jews - Bolsheviks - Zionist are America’s enemies. See: Talmud - Sanhedrin “Kill the Best Gentiles!” ” The writings are signed by “James W. Von Brunn.”
On Thursday, a search warrant was executed on the vehicle and evidence technicians recovered .22 caliber ammunition inside. Further investigation revealed that Brunn lived in Annapolis, Maryland. When FBI agents responded to the address, a woman was located inside the apartment. She consented to an interview with FBI agents and stated that Brunn moved to the apartment about two years ago. Brunn’s son, James, also lives inside the apartment and owns his own room, for $400 a month. The woman also stated that, when James moved to the apartment about two years ago, he came with two weapons, a 30/30 rifle and a .22 caliber rifle.
When a search warrant was executed at Brunn’s address, investigators recovered .22 caliber ammunition and a 30/30 rifle from Brunn’s bedroom. Ledgers, journals and manuscripts were also recovered.
“Further investigation of James Wenneker Von Brunn [redacted] reveals that Von Brunn is a known white supremacist who has espoused hate speech directed specifically towards Jews for an extensive period of time. Specifically, Von Brunn claimed to have written a short novel entitled “Kill the Best Gentiles,” which can be found on his website,” the complaint read. The novel on his website details how Brunn believed the government was being run by Jews and that the Jews were looking to “extinguish the white race.”
Members of the Metropolitan Police Department took fingerprints of the suspect and confirmed they matched with known prints of James W. Von Brunn.
The museum is expected to re-open on Friday. Israel condemned the shooting incident and said it was “shocked and saddened.” Both President Obama, who was briefed on the incident, and D.C. Mayor Fenty said they were “saddened” by the events. Jerusalem Mayor Barkat said he was “disheartened” to learn of the attack.
