U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan lauds election turnout and praises voters
September 19th, 2010 - 2:12 am ICT by BNO NewsKABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) – The U.S. Embassy in Kabul praised the elections in Afghanistan, as millions of Afghans turned out to vote despite rocket attacks and sporadic violence spread across the country, the U.S. lauded the voters, calling them “courageous”.
The U.S. lauded the elections as the first fully Afghan-led parliamentary elections, carried out under extremely difficult circumstances, since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. “Millions of courageous men and women went to the polls and executed their democratic right to vote,” the U.S. Embassy noted.
It said that the Taliban tried to stop the people from voting, as expected, but the Afghan people defied them by voting anyway.
“Protected by competent and brave Afghan National Security Forces, the voters demonstrated their courage, choosing to take ownership of their future and shape of their government.”
The results of the election, as the U.S. noted, will not be immediate and could take days of counting. The U.S. said that they will fully back the findings of the Afghan independent electoral institutions as they do their job in the coming weeks, including measure to detect and weed out fraud.
The U.S. Embassy concluded, saying that the U.S. will continue to support the Afghan people and elections that are led by them in a credible, free, and transparent way. It stated that the Afghan people are ultimately in charge of the success of its elections, now.
