NUEVO LAREDO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) — The Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo is open again to the public Tuesday, four days after a grenade attack, U.S. officials said.

At 11:00 p.m. local time on April 9, a grenade was thrown over the fence of the consulate, causing damage to the building. There were no injuries reported.

“We are now confident that there is adequate security to keep visitors and staff safe, and therefore we are able to announce that the Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo will be open to the public on Tuesday, April 13,” the consulate said in an statement.

The Consular Agency in Piedras Negras, also closed after the grenade attack in Nuevo Laredo, will reopen on Wednesday, April 14, its next regularly-scheduled work day.

This is not the first time than a U.S. Consulate en Mexico is attacked amid rising drug violence. On October 12, 2008, gunmen hurled a grenade at the U.S. consulate in Monterrey. On March 13, 2010 two U.S. Consular employees and a Mexican linked to the U.S. Consulate in Juarez were killed by hitmen.
