SOMALIA (BNO NEWS) — Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama has been rescued after being held captive by pirates on a lifeboat off Somalia for more than five days, U.S. officials told BNO News.

“I can confirm that Captain Phillips has been safely recovered, we appreciate the team effort from our partner agencies in the safe recovery,” a U.S. State Department spokeswoman told BNO News. She did not know which agencies were involved in the operation.

The spokeswoman confirmed Phillips was not injured but could not say if any pirates were killed or arrested in the operation. According to CNN and the Associated Press, three pirates were killed and a fourth was reportedly arrested.

CNN said Phillips is currently on the USS Bainbridge, a nearby naval warship.
