U.S. and El Salvador to protect archeological heritage of El Salvador
March 9th, 2010 - 3:38 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – An extension of the Memorandum of Understanding Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of El Salvador Concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Certain Categories or Archeological Material from the Pre-Hispanic Cultures of the Republic of El Salvador was agreed, a U.S. Department of State spokesman announced on Monday.
With this agreement the cooperation that began in 1995 is ratified as the United States demonstrated its continued respect and concern for the cultural heritage of El Salvador, as well as the importance it has in human history.
Due to the fact that El Salvador’s cultural patrimony remains in jeopardy from pillage, the new extension enables the continued imposition of import restrictions on certain archeological objects ranging in date from 8000 B.C. to 1550 A.D., including objects made of ceramic, metal, and stone.
In 2009, the Department of Homeland Security recovered archeological objects, such as ceramic vessels and musical instruments dating to 300 to 900, upon importation into the United States. These will be repatriated to Salvadoran authorities.
The agreement also calls upon both governments to encourage academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and other private entities to cooperate in the exchange of knowledge and information about the cultural patrimony of El Salvador, and to collaborate in its preservation and protection.
