WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The U.S. government expressed its remarks on Wednesday regarding the death of Cuban dissident Orlando Zapata Tamayo on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

Zapata died after an eleven-week hunger strike while being held as prisoner at a Cuban prison. Zapata was arrested in 2003 on charges of contempt for authority. He was one of approximately 200 political prisoners in Cuba.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of his death, and the U.S. government extends its heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and supporters,” an U.S. Department of State spokesman said.

While visiting Havana last week, the U.S. delegation raised Zapata’s incarceration and poor health with Cuban officials and urged them to provide all necessary medical care.
