UPS planes searched after suspicious item found in London
October 29th, 2010 - 11:51 pm ICT by BNO NewsNEW YORK (BNO NEWS) — Authorities in New York, Philadelphia, Newark, New Jersey and several countries are examining devices sent from Yemen after investigators found a suspicious package aboard a UPS plane in London, media reports said on Friday.
According to CNN, investigators found a suspicious package aboard a plane flying from Yemen to Chicago when it stopped in London on Thursday night. The network also said that two similar packages are being checked at UK’s East Midlands airport and in Dubai.
The suspicious package, found during routine screening in London, contained a toner cartridge with wires and powder. According to the BBC, another suspicious item found at UK’s East Midlands airport was not a bomb, but was “potentially sinister.”
The London incident prompted inspection of arriving cargo flights in Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia, as U.S. authorities, according to ABC News, are investigating a bomb plot against U.S. cargo planes.
“Out of an abundance of caution the planes were moved to a remote location where they are being met by law enforcement officials and swept,” the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said in a statement.
UPS said in a statement that it is cooperating with authorities as its shipment is being removed from the planes.
