NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) — Dozens of people were injured after the Staten Island Ferry crashed into a terminal on Saturday morning, emergency officials said.

The first call came in at 9.25 a.m. EDT after the ferry crashed into terminal 5 at the St. George Ferry Terminal, according to the New York City Fire Department. A spokesman at the scene said there were multiple patients with minor injuries.

According to a spokesman for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, at least sixty people were injured when the ferry crashed into the terminal, causing a full breach in its hull. He said most injuries were believed to be minor, but said information on the severity could change.

“It appears the ferry experienced a hard landing,” a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said. She said an unknown number of people were injured, but said no one was in a critical condition.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management advised people to expect delays at the St. George Ferry Terminal. “Emergency personnel are responding to a Staten Island docking incident,” the department said in a notification sent out to residents.

The accident involved the MV Andrew J. Barberi, the same ferry that was involved in an accident in October 2003. It then also crashed into the St. George ferry terminal, killing 11 people and injuring 71 others.
