University of Miami lockdown after reported shooting
November 21st, 2009 - 3:34 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattMiami, Nov 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In an unfortunate incident, Shooting was reported on the ‘Coral Gables Campus’ in the University of Miami. As a result, the campus has been placed on a lockdown and is completely closed. It is believed that BB Guns were used in this incident. It is not known whether there are any causalities or not.
Because of this unfortunate incident, an Emergency Notification Network alert was sent to all the members of the University of Miami community around 2:42 p.m. warning them of a shooting on the Coral Gables campus.
The text alert asked members of the community to “go/remain indoors, lock all doors/windows, stay away from windows and do not open locked doors for anyone.”
According to a secretary at the Wellness Center, the shooting took place on the parking lot behind the Bank United Center and in front of the Wellness Center.
No further details are available right now, but an officer from UMPD that declined to give his name did confirm that an investigation is underway and that the campus will remain on lockdown until the danger has completely passed. There has been no description of the gunman/gunmen as yet too.
The incident involved a BB gun. BB guns are a type of air gun designed to shoot projectiles called BB after the Birdshot pellet of approximately the same size. The BB guns used today usually have a smoothbore barrel, with a bore diameter and caliber of 0.177 inches (4.5 mm).
