September 14th, 2010 - 8:56 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSep 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who was present in the court to defend charges of attempting to bomb an airplane traveling to the Detroit Airport sacked his lawyers on Monday and stated his intention to defend himself and admit his guilt for some of the charges leveled against him.
The 23-year-old Nigerian has been charged with trying to bomb Flight 253 belonging to the Northwester Airlines, which took off from the Amsterdam Airport in the Netherlands to Detroit. The plane’s passengers overpowered him when the plane got near the Detroit Airport.
Abdulmutallab appeared before Judge Nancy G Edmunds of the Detroit District Court on Monday and stated his intentions to skip the use of defense lawyers and defend himself according to the Wall Street Journal.
Even though the judge didn’t like the idea, he gave the alleged terrorist permission for his request. The judge however stated she might give Abdulmutallab a part time lawyer to help in his defense proceedings.
When Abdulmutallab asked the judge about steps to take in case he wanted to admit guilt for some of his charges, Judge Edmunds stated that she wasn’t in a position to give him any legal advice.
