UN prepares to aid Central Americans affected by tropical storm Agatha

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – The United Nations are preparing to assist tens of thousands of Central Americans who were affected by the heavy flooding and landslides caused by the tropical storm Agatha, the UN News announced .

Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador have declared emergencies after the storm, which caused 175 deaths and over 150,000 people evacuated. The tropical storm Agatha caused the largest amount of rainfall in over 60 years.

The rains are still continuing in all three countries, but the tropical storm Agatha has been downgraded to a low pressure system which is dissipating gradually. The UN Development Programme, allocated an initial amount of $500,000for assessments and for defining an early recovery strategy.

The World Food Programme also requested $500,000 to provide initial aid to some 10,000 people for 15 days. This is in addition to the relief and food items being sent by the Government to the affected areas.

In Guatemala, the situation was worsened after the Pacaya volcano eruption. In Honduras, 14 people have been reported as dead. Ten people have reportedly died in El Salvador while 11,000 were evacuated.
