U.N. condemns ‘despicable display of violence’ after attacks against Afghan government buildings
May 6th, 2010 - 3:21 pm ICT by BNO NewsKABUL (BNO NEWS) — The United Nations on Thursday condemned a ‘despicable display of violence’ in the Afghan city of Zaranj a day earlier.
The attacks, which targeted government buildings, took place in Zaranj, the capital city of Nimroz Province. Three police officers and Provincial Council member Gul Makai Wakili were killed, while four civilians and seven police officers were injured.
“These attacks were a despicable display of violence,” said Staffan de Mistura, the Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Afghanistan. “Ms Gul Makai Wakili, who was also a poet, was committed to working for women’s rights in Zaranj, respected by her constituents and had a nationwide vision for the future of Afghanistan.”
Mistura said the thoughts of the U.N. family in Afghanistan go out to Wakili’s family, friends and colleagues and also to those police officers killed and injured.
