New York, May 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Drug smugglers from Mexico are peddling an ultra potent form of heroin in the US. The drug, which sells for just $10 for a bag, is said to be very deadly. Authorities say the drug is so potent that sometimes they find the straw and the needles used to inject lying near the dead victims. Since 2006, the annual death of heroin overdose have almost tripled to 29 in Chicago’s Will County, and authorities said that they fear the cheap price of the drug could widen the drugs popularity and use. The drug is believed to be coming into the United States via Mexico and Columbia.
Heroin which initially smuggled in from Asia, especially Afghanistan, used to be just 5 percent pure, and so it was quite a popular fashion to inject the drug. But the drug cartels in Mexico and Columbia have developed advanced ways to purify the drug and bring the price down. This procedure produces heroin that can be as much as 80 percent pure.
The number of people who died recently from heroin related causes were 3000. That amount is higher than the number that died in the year 2000 from heroin related causes. The figure for year 2000 was 2,000 deaths.
Medical examiners have a hard time pinpointing heroin as the cause of death because of the drug’s high metabolism rate.
