UK store sells out of reindeer pate
December 20th, 2011 - 1:34 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Dec 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Vegetarians International Voice for Animals started a campaign to draw support against grocery store Harvey Nichols for its reindeer pate. The campaign though seemed to have backfired because it has helped empty the shelves of the store.
VIVA urged Britons to join the campaign to force Harvey Nichols to remove the reindeer pates from the shelves. The campaign though seemed to have increased the popularity of delicacy leading to the product being emptied from the shelves.
Nonetheless, VIVA insists that Harvey Nichols has broken the law by selling those products. The group explained that, “No matter how the reindeer that Harvey Nichols are selling are raised, it does not detract from the fact that they are selling a ‘novelty’ meat from a wild animal in British stores. This in itself goes toward popularizing the consumption of meat from wild animals, and that in-turn can put potentially disastrous pressure on populations already suffering from the threats of climate change, urban encroachment, pollution and poaching.”
A store spokesperson revealed that it was the campaign from VIVA that helped push the products off the shelves under such a short period. The spokesperson said they will not be able to restock before the Christmas.
