Uganda police find unexploded suicide vest amongst the debris at the site of the bomb blast
July 13th, 2010 - 11:31 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattKampala, July 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Police in Uganda have found an unexploded suicide vest that had ball bearings at a hall in Kampala. The police found the explosive vest on Monday, a day after two deadly blasts in other parts of the Ugandan capital claimed the lives of 76 people. The bombs went off when during Spain’s World Cup final match with the Netherlands.
Police said that the vest they found is consistent with the type of bombs that were used in the twin bombings. Police call the find a very significant lead in their investigation into the bombings.
So far, investigators said that they have arrested four people in connection with the discovery of the vest. Though police said that the arrested people are not Ugandans, they have failed to name the country of origin of the suspects.
Somalia’s Al-Shabab immediately claimed responsibility after the blast. The group has acknowledged responsibility for the bombings saying that Uganda should withdraw its troops from Somalia. Al-Shabab remains Somalia’s most dangerous terrorist group. The group banned viewing of the World Cup in Somalia.
This is the first time Al-Shabab has struck outside Somalia, although the group has threatened several times to do so. The bomb raises security concerns at that region of Africa.
