uc DavisNov. 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Police arrested at least 52 people during the protests being held at UC Davis. Hundreds were assembled to protest against the 32% hike in the tuition fees. The regents of the University of California approved the increase on Thursday even as hundreds of students demonstrated an active protest outside. The new rule implies that the students will have to pay almost triple the sum they had to pay less than a decade back. The move will come into effect the next fall semester, shooting undergraduate fees up to over 10,000 dollars per year. More and more students joined the protests even as the meeting continued inside the Mrak Hall, assembling outside with the cries “don’t deprive me of my education” and”question UC leadership.”

Protests in the University of California had continued over two days after the people over the hefty increase in the tuition fees. After the arrests were made, students continued to voice their protests. A student said that the protests and arrests are a “sacrifice” and a “statement”. The authorities defended their move by saying that it was necessary because the government could not meet the University’s requirements on account of the recession. They have scheduled a meeting on Friday in which the students would voice their opinions.

Police had to be informed to get the crowd under control, but the protesters refused to budge form the scene even after their arrival. Some of the protesters blocked the exits to the Mrak Hall by linking their arms with one another. However, the regents were able to leave without any problems as the police escorted them.
