Tylenol Recall 2009
September 25th, 2009 - 3:18 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )New Brunswick, Sep 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pharmaceutical major Johnson & Johnson has issued a complete recall of all 80-milligram Children’s Tylenol Meltaways packaged in bottles and blisters, 80-milligram Children’s Tylenol SoftChews packaged in blisters, and 160-milligram Jr. Tylenol Meltaways packaged in blisters. It is said to be a voluntary recall.
The recall is due to the blister package design, as well as the information on the blister package and on the blister and bottle cartons which may be confusing and could lead to improper dosing, including over-dosing, in children.
The package design includes blister voids that contain one tablet while other voids contain two tablets. Many people have raised the concern that labeling on the carton and on the back of the two-tablet cavities may wrongly suggest to the consumer that two tablets provide a total of 80mg of the active ingredient, acetaminophen, when in reality, two tablets would actually provide 160mg of acetaminophen, leading to overdosing.
It’s extremely rare that companies issue voluntary recalls because recalls are extremely high on the financial side plus lead to bad negative publicity as well. However, the Tylenol recall 2009 won’t force the company into tax negotiation settlement or other financial hardship as Tylenol is owned by Pharmaceutical major Johnson & Johnson, a mountain of a company that owns everything from Band-Aid products to baby care products.
Taking more than the recommended dose (overdose) of acetaminophen may cause critical liver damage when taking the product for fever or pain relief over the course of the three- or five-day period specified by the labeling on the blister or carton.
