COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA (BNO NEWS) – Two South Carolina residents were sentenced to 40 months in prison and to pay $421,014 in restitution for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.

Floyd Hargrove, 39, of Beaufort, and William Toadvine, 32, of Mt. Pleasant, owned and operated Car Connection, a used car business in Beaufort.

From 2003 to 2005, both defendants deceived lenders that facilitate car loans to Car Connection users. Hargrove and Toadvine altered the loan applications in order to qualify for loans. In the false loan documents, they exaggerated the income or minimized the debt; they also changed the mileage of the used cars to overstate the value of the loan collateral.

As a result of these actions many of the loans processed by the defendants were not repaid causing losses of $421,014 to various financial institutions.
